After reading a previous post I was a little concerned about the difficulty but after completing the loop from red to blue, which took about 3 hours, I have to say yes, its moderate to slightly difficult in some places - but like my son and me - if you have water, use poles and wear hiking boots, you'll be fine. The actual trail for the observation point is about 1.4 in where you’ll take the right and up the path. Only took one hour to get to the top and it was challenging but fun in my opinion. Many trip reports I read on Jay Mountain hike mention the mile and a half walk on the ridgeline to the eastern summit, after reaching the western summit, can be quite confusing. I highly recommend this hike and I will do it again in the spring, great trail! I followed yellow markers which were a little harder to spot. I've done over 25 peaks in the ADKs and though this is not one of them, I was happy to know that such an amazing hike was only 1.5 hours from Albany. It was unexpected, and the “loop” is more like a lollipop shape. First 2.4 miles are easy a few muddy spots, but the fallen leaves cover it up well.
